Hawaii Electric Light Co. said that 4,369 customers in Kohala, Pepeekeo, Kaloko and parts of Hilo lost power for a short time on Monday morning when Hawi Renewable Development Wind Farm tripped offline.

According to a written HELCO statement, the utility was forced to take “load shedding” measures to protect its equipment, which resulted in the power interruptions. The utility said its employees started additional generators and service to all affected customers was restored within seven minutes.

The cause of the wind farm outage is under investigation by Hawi Revewable Development, HELCO said.
